Genre and Diegesis

Genre, as Thompson describes it, is the various types of films which have a recognizable and familiar narrative form.
For example - we have - Gangster, Western, Musical .. we can more or less predict what would it be about and how it will end, expect certain shots, music and "over acting".

In MusicVideos we also have different styles, like Goth, Hip Hop, R&B, Classical, Rock..etc
In the class we watched 3 videos. All of them had no extra verbal narrative outside the lyrics, except the first one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw&feature=fvst

Now, if talking about Diegesis (Narrative's voice, we search for series of codes and conventions, that give the text its meaning. (Metz)
When the sound becomes part of the narrative/ is integrated into it - we can certainly say it is a diegetic song! A Song without any purpose is called non-diegetic.

The diegetic communication takes place in movement, symbols, beat style, fashion, lighting, special effects (like speed for ex.)and so on.

But the question is: Is it important to have a video related to sound and lyrics? I would say yes, because it makes one single product of creation...at the same time - we have plenty of successful MusicVideos which are not correlated to the lyrics of the song...so, really...is it time to change our point of view? :)

about Boltanski exhibition in Paris

http://www.monumenta.com/2010/english/monumenta/Monumenta-2010.html

The exhibition which I attended is called “Personnes”, which means both “people” and “nobodies”. It took place in Paris, at the Grand Palais, just in the heart of this marvelous city, which makes actually one of the main criteria of any successful event.
The general atmosphere was very much imposing. You could feel it just at the entrance where was a huge long wall of hundreds of metal numbered boxes, where usually the things of dead people are kept. The exhibition took place in the middle of winter; the artist wanted to achieve exactly this feeling of a cold and gray ambiance. The sound of 400 heartbeats in the 13,500 m² of space and the noise of the crane that was grabbing the clothes up and down from the 15m high mountain of dress – made it even more striking. So, you could easily understand the idea of oppression, war and suffering, walking through the scattered cloths, interacting with the installation itself, becoming part of it…
Grand Palais is a very well known spot, being almost in the middle of the famous Champs-Elysees street which is a logistically easy approachable area, with parking nearby and a huge main entrance. All this makes an easy access to the exhibition, with enough space for puffer zone. Also to mention is that the big area is an advantage for an easy evacuation plan.
As about the price: it was promoted for the widest possible access; different people of all ages would pay accessible prices at the ticket box: 4 euros (2 euros for concessions). All this information you could find on the website, as well as the short description of what are you going to see there.
Concerning the marketing, they used all kinds of media, but the main emphasis was put on billboards, as in Paris the information related to artistic events usually is transmitted in this way, most of them posted in metro stations. Actually I wouldn’t say I noticed a great advertising for this exhibition, as I suppose, the name of the artist (Christian Boltanski) is already well known and the venue is also very famous and plus MONUMENTA project which got a lot of attention during the past years. So, just the fact that you read one of these names on a poster, you could already be sure that it’s going to be a great show and there is no need for captivating marketing tools.
The organizers were very careful to the all little elements that would complete an already impressive installation. There were nice people that could anytime help or answer your questions; guides who would fix a group very fast, so that you wouldn’t wait too much; there were flyers, enough information provided in different languages, in order to better understand the idea of the artist. But the most remarkable detail that I noticed was the intelligence of the security. I asked one of them a question and it turned into a discussion about the exhibition for about half an hour. So, I could surely say that the staff was very much educated, which is another big advantage of any successful event.
At the end of the tour, full of emotions, I liked the idea that you could find an area for relaxing. You could watch the other people walking, read news papers or art magazines related to the proper exhibition, find books of the artist or about the artist and even watch the interview with the artist on the screen. You could also go and record your own heartbeats for the artist’s collection and even save it on a CD and buy it for 5 euro if you wished.
In conclusion, I may say that it was a very good experience not just from an artistic point of view, but from a professional perspective too. It was a great example of a very well organized event, starting with advertising, ticket prices, entrance, information provided, general atmosphere, and ending with a highly educated staff.

...ON THE EASTERN FRONT

The exhibition examines the effects of the changes taking place in the region of the former Soviet Bloc on the individual and on various groups of society from the aspect of socio-psychology. It focuses on the human dimensions of the transition beginning from the end of the eighties and on, micro-processes involved.
What is our attitude to our historical past? What are the consequences of the changes in national identity and national stereotypes? How can individual lives be carried on amidst all these rearrangements in society? What intergroup relations and conflicts have played a defining role in the last twenty years?

You can see the video here:

I liked the idea. On this subject one can speculate a lot and there is a lot to say..
Well, I am from Republic of Moldova and I think this subject is very much close to me..But let's forget my identity and I'll try to think from another perspective. First, the exhibition takes place in Hungary - a country which also had to suffer a lot from the changing of the "Soviet Bloc". From this point of view - i would say that for Hungarians it wouldn't be hard to understand the message behind the Videos.
So- nice done! The subject is attractive and it is PRESENT.
Secondly - it takes place in Ludwig Museum - a very well known spot. And usually, we say that if an exhibition takes place in Ludwig - it means - a great show.Which is true at leas for me each time I go there.
Advertising - is good: we have the site which provides info, fun zine and magazines like that, even videos in you tube...But Ludwig attracts people all the times...no need for a huge marketing.
Back to the subject. Let me mention that I didn't like all the Videos...which is totally ok..as it is a contemporary VideoArt exhibition, and you simply can't like everything.
But if to specify - I didn't like the CHTO DELAT, entitled PERESTROIKA SONGSPIEL.
Firs of all I think it's very hard to get the message. 5 people are singing in a Russian didactic play - in a chorus..in Russian..there are English subtitles.
It is a total lack of comprehension. May be this is what they would like to achieve through this video. But I really like the idea and it's a pity they couldn't get it in a nicer manner..in a clearer manner..
The idea is that there are 5 'archetypal figures of the (Russian) change of regime': the democrat, the businessman, the revolutionary, the nationalist and the feminist. Great idea! They are arguing about their country's future. The authors could do something extraordinary starting from this idea. But the fact that you are watching 5 people singing in a chorus and you have to read the subtitles in English at the same time..makes a total chaos. I think this, only Russians can understand..and it's not really for European Public.

Now, let me say that I was proud to see the work of an artist from Moldova: Pavel Braila. It's a very simple shot of how all trains in Ungheni (small frontier station at the Moldavian-Romanian border) have to wait like 3h at the station, while their wheels are replaced from Russian gauge to standard Eu gauge.
Very simple video..but the IDEA is what is crucial here: the distinction between the East and West. We still use the Russian gauge and we still have to change wheels to get to the Eu side...

1.

Discussing the aesthetic changes from traditional MusicVideo, we mentioned the differences that took place in acting, lighting, set and scene, camera, performance, etc.
What a great development in just a couple of years! :)

The early Videos were actually seeing the performer, showing all the action with NO "cut-away".Now - the movement is essential..
What didn't really change are the basic elements of a song : lyrics, melody, vocal quality, beat, rhythm, instrumentation, the energy - all that produces the "overall effect". If thinking about the early videos with their fashion and style, the very controlled set on stage, the limited details that could be seen, everybody would agree that it wasn't of such a Good Quality..

With time, the singer becomes an actor that moves, dances, shows something extraordinary. The more we go towards our times, the more we observe the trend of PERSONIFICATION of style..

Organize an Exhibition/THEORY

First of all we shall mention that first exhibitions took place in MUSEUMS...all we know the classical old style of presenting works.
Now, it became a real Concept of artists and curators; the exhibition becomes the artwork itself, as it differs from others and compete through creativeness and style.
Then, the Gallery appeared (profit/non-profit), which has an annual schedule, certain programs, shows and fairs; contracts and money...
Modern times permitted places without borders for any kind of exhibition, so that it can also take place in an abandoned place too - which permits a total freedom...

Now, the second part of the theory is dedicated to what types of an exhibition do we have:

1permanent
2temporary
3solo/one man show
4group - a. thematic
b. special group of artists
c. art fairs
d. biennial
e. triennials
f. international shows
g. national shows
h. juried
i. invitational
j. open
k. documenta etc

And the third part of the theory includes the certain steps in organizing an exhibition:

1. IDEA
2. TITLE
3. RESEARCH
4. LOCATION
5. BUDGET
6. SPONSORS
7. FUND-RAISING
8. SELECTION
9. LIST
10. INSURANCE
11. CONTRACTS
12. RESTORATION
13. TRANSPORT
14. ARRANGEMENT
15. WEBSITE
16. ADVERTISING
17. PRESS RELEASE
18. PRESS CONFERENCE
19. INVITATIONS
20. GIFTS
21. MUSEUM SHOPS
22. DESIGN
23. REPAINTING WALLS
24. ARRANGE THE ART WORKS
25. TECHNIQUE
26. ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT
27. AUDIO GUIDES
28. INTERACTIVE TRICKS
29. PRICE LISTS
30. SECURITY
31. PREVIEW OPENING
32. FINIS-AGE
33. ARCHIVING
34. ATTENDANCE
35. DOCUMENTATION

BBS 50 Other Voices, Other Rooms – Attempt(s) at Reconstruction

http://www.mucsarnok.hu/new_site/index.php?lang=en&t=515 (description)

An exhibition and film screenings in Műcsarnok.

..Was a bit disappointed about what i saw there and how i felt...
I was expecting much more from this exhibition.. I couldn't get the feeling of 'WOW'. ..Agree, nowadays with such a different ART, it's hard to get really 'WOW', but anyway - i think that an exhibition like this, an EVENT like this, COULD! get to the 'WOW' degree..but for me- it didn't..unfortunately..

After i red the description for the site..i thought..hm..it wasn't actually so bad..but let me tell you the biggest problem:

The thing is that it's very important to get the message of an exhibition...or at least - get a special feeling. I don't say that each time we go to an exhibition we have to understand it properly..like 100% ...it s like i would say that each time we look at a painting or at any work of art, we should understand it..NO..of course not..but at least i think that a Good piece of ART reveals feelings (and I'm not saying by all means nice and pleasant ones!)
So- back to the main problem - I couldn't really get any message. It was diverse - OK, fine...but there should be a kind of meaning or a connection between the works.
Spreading pictures/videos/photos/movies in the space - don't think is the best idea.
And finally- where were that small pieces of paper on which i could find any kind of explanation? Usually you could get them at the entrance. .. Haven't seen any..
And by the way - someone told me - there were!! - but only in Hungarian.
..Why wouldn't they think about the foreign visitors???

We got there 20 min after the opening. The wine was already finished. What a pity.. We tried to listen in front of a screen, but the headphones were broken.. again- what a pity!

Anyway - we had some nice experience too..1 or 2 things that we liked..but it was just entertainment..

in one word- i would call it .. almost a FAIL :/
