Genre and Diegesis

Genre, as Thompson describes it, is the various types of films which have a recognizable and familiar narrative form.
For example - we have - Gangster, Western, Musical .. we can more or less predict what would it be about and how it will end, expect certain shots, music and "over acting".

In MusicVideos we also have different styles, like Goth, Hip Hop, R&B, Classical, Rock..etc
In the class we watched 3 videos. All of them had no extra verbal narrative outside the lyrics, except the first one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw&feature=fvst

Now, if talking about Diegesis (Narrative's voice, we search for series of codes and conventions, that give the text its meaning. (Metz)
When the sound becomes part of the narrative/ is integrated into it - we can certainly say it is a diegetic song! A Song without any purpose is called non-diegetic.

The diegetic communication takes place in movement, symbols, beat style, fashion, lighting, special effects (like speed for ex.)and so on.

But the question is: Is it important to have a video related to sound and lyrics? I would say yes, because it makes one single product of creation...at the same time - we have plenty of successful MusicVideos which are not correlated to the lyrics of the song...so, really...is it time to change our point of view? :)
